The Good Housekeeping Institute originally opened in 1924, and spent the best part of the next century teaching the nation how to cook simple, delicious dishes at home. In 2015, the Institute unveiled its new Central London home – with a cookery school at the heart of it. Today, its team of friendly, expert tutors offer beginners and competent cooks alike the chance to hone their skills on an array of the Institute tried-and-tested recipes, with courses ranging from classic cakes to pasta and gnocchi. The knife skills classes offer an essential foundation for the keen home cook, and the school is a must-visit around Christmas time, when the tutors start talking turkey. Prices range from £30 to £180, making the Institute great value for the level of expertise you get, but the real stroke of genius is the one-hour, single-dish masterclasses they run every Wednesday for the after-work crowd.
